Aptos (APT)

A Layer 1 blockchain built on the Move programming language and Move VM by former Meta/Diem engineers, designed for high throughput and security with proof-of-stake consensus , backed by $200M from a16z, Multicoin Capital, and Binance.

What is Aptos?

A Layer 1 proof-of-stake blockchain built by former Meta/Diem engineers using the Move programming language , designed for high throughput and security, with mainnet launched in October 2022 after raising $200M from major institutional investors.

Bitcoin is the first decentralized cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by an individual or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. It operates as a peer-to-peer electronic payment system that enables direct transactions between users without intermediaries such as banks or payment processors.

Bitcoin transactions are secured using the SHA-256 cryptographic algorithm and recorded on a distributed public ledger called a blockchain, maintained across thousands of computers worldwide. New blocks are added approximately every 10 minutes.

Layer 1 Proof-of-Stake Blockchain

Aptos is a Layer 1 blockchain network operating on a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Validators stake APT tokens to participate in block production and earn rewards, providing network security without the energy consumption of proof-of-work systems.

Move Programming Language

The network is built using the Move programming language and Move virtual machine, originally designed and developed for Meta's Diem blockchain project. Move was specifically optimized for blockchain development with formal verification capabilities and asset safety guarantees.

Former Meta/Diem Team

The Aptos team consists of former developers, researchers, and architects from Diem, Meta's previous blockchain project. The team brings direct experience building and operating large-scale blockchain infrastructure, informing the design decisions behind Aptos's architecture.

High Throughput & Security

Aptos aims to provide high throughput and security as a standalone blockchain platform. The Move VM's design enables parallel transaction execution, allowing the network to process multiple transactions simultaneously and increase overall network capacity.

$200M Funding Round

The network secured funding of $200 million from notable investors including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Multicoin Capital, and Binance, among others , providing significant institutional capital for development and ecosystem growth prior to mainnet launch.

Mainnet Launch (October 2022)

Aptos released a Devnet in March 2022 and an incentivized testnet in May 2022, with mainnet launch occurring in October 2022 , following a compressed development timeline that demonstrated the team's ability to ship production infrastructure from their Diem experience.

Ecosystem & Development

Aptos has built an active developer ecosystem leveraging the Move language's safety properties, with DeFi protocols, NFT platforms, and applications targeting the network's high throughput and institutional-backed infrastructure.

DeFi & NFT Ecosystem

Aptos hosts a growing DeFi ecosystem including decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, and NFT platforms built using the Move language's asset safety features , attracting developers who prioritize formal verification and reduced smart contract vulnerability risk.

Move Language Advantages

Move's resource-oriented programming model treats digital assets as first-class objects that cannot be duplicated or implicitly destroyed, reducing common vulnerabilities in token contracts. This provides developers with stronger safety guarantees than EVM-based smart contract languages.

Institutional Backing & Partnerships

Backing from a16z, Multicoin Capital, and Binance provides Aptos with financial resources and institutional credibility for long-term ecosystem development , supporting developer grants, protocol incentives, and enterprise partnership programs for network adoption.
